Couples Financial Counseling

A Plain-English Guide for Couples Who Want to Stop Fighting About Money and Start Working as a Team

Couples Financial Counseling

Money is emotion disguised as numbers. And that's why money arguments are usually about what lies underneath. They’re about stress. Power. Trust. Who carries the mental load. Who feels heard. Who feels stuck.

If you’re searching for couples financial counseling, you’re probably looking for help navigating money together. Without shame, blame, or one partner feeling like the problem. That's what I do.

This post will walk you through what couples financial counseling is, who it’s for, and how it can help your relationship.

About Me

I support couples who want to manage money and the home as a team. I'm the only Accredited Financial Counselor®, Certified Financial Therapist®, and Fair Play Facilitator®, empowering high-achieving couples with systems to manage money and the home as a team — drawn from decades of national leadership and lived experience.

What Is Couples Financial Counseling?

Couples financial counseling is a collaborative process that helps partners improve how they communicate, decide, and work together around money.

It sits at the intersection of:

  • Financial counseling

  • Relationship dynamics

  • Behavioral and emotional patterns around money

Unlike traditional financial planning, couples financial counseling doesn’t start with investments or net worth. It starts with people — their histories, expectations, fears, and goals.

And unlike marriage counseling, it focuses specifically on how money decisions affect:

  • Power and fairness

  • Roles and responsibilities

  • Emotional safety

  • Long-term planning

My couples' financial counseling can (but doesn't have to) include conversations about unpaid labor, mental load, and invisible work, because money never exists in isolation from how a household actually runs.

Why Couples Fight About Money in the First Place

Most couples fight about money because it is emotionally loaded and structurally confusing. Common causes include:

  • Different money histories or financial upbringings

  • Income gaps that quietly shift power

  • One partner carrying the mental load of finances

  • Disagreements over spending priorities

  • Stress from debt, kids, caregiving, or career changes

  • Avoidance by one partner and control by the other

When these issues go unspoken, resentment fills the gap. I create a neutral space to slow these patterns down and rebuild trust.

Signs a Couple May Benefit From Financial Counseling

You don’t need to be in a crisis to benefit from couples financial counseling. Many couples seek support when:

  • Money conversations turn into arguments or shutdowns

  • One partner manages everything and feels overwhelmed

  • The other partner feels excluded or criticized

  • You’re financially “fine” but emotionally tense

  • Big decisions keep getting delayed

  • Resentment is building around who does more — paid or unpaid

  • You want to prevent money issues from becoming marriage issues

If you’ve ever said, “We should be doing better than this,” that’s often a sign counseling could help.

What Happens in Couples Financial Counseling?

In a typical couples financial counseling process with me, you can expect:

  • A joint intake to understand your goals and stress points

  • Exploration of each partner’s relationship with money

  • Identification of patterns rather than blame

  • Conversations about fairness, roles, and responsibility

  • Creation of shared systems that fit your real life

  • Tools for having better money conversations going forward

Most importantly, my sessions are shame-free and judgment-free.

How Couples Financial Counseling Is Different From Just Budgeting

Budgeting is a tool. Counseling is a process.

You can have:

  • A detailed budget

  • Automated savings

  • Strong credit scores

…and still feel disconnected or resentful.

That’s because budgeting doesn’t address:

  • Emotional triggers

  • Power dynamics

  • Mental load

  • Differing definitions of “responsible”

  • Avoidance or control patterns

Couples financial counseling helps you understand why certain money behaviors keep showing up, and how to change them together.

My Approach to Couples Financial Counseling

I offer couples financial counseling through many lenses. I'm a Certified Financial Therapist, Accredited Financial Counselor, and Fair Play Facilitator. I'm also a former national educator of the year who taught personal finance and economics. Helping individuals and couples manage money as a team is my life's work and my passion.

My collective experiences have taught me that:

  • Both paid and unpaid work matter

  • Money is never separated from time, energy, and responsibility

  • No shame

  • Systems are built to support teamwork, not control

  • Conversations focus on values, not just numbers

If you’re seeking couples financial counseling, this approach prioritizes long-term relationship health, not just short-term fixes.

Who Couples Financial Counseling Is (and Is Not) For

A good fit if you are:

  • Engaged, married, or long-term partners

  • Willing to participate honestly

  • Interested in teamwork, not winning

  • Navigating a transition (kids, career, home, caregiving)

  • Wanting fewer fights and clearer decisions

Not a good fit if:

  • One partner wants counseling to “fix” the other

  • You’re only looking for investment management

  • One partner refuses to participate at all (I do support individuals)

Clarity upfront saves everyone time and frustration.

Common Questions About Couples Financial Counseling

Do we have to be in trouble to start?

No. Many couples start proactively to prevent future conflict.

What if one partner is skeptical?

That’s common. Counseling often helps skeptical partners feel heard, not pressured.

Is this therapy or financial planning?

It’s financial counseling informed by financial therapy principles, focused on practical outcomes.

How long does it take?

Some couples see progress in a few sessions. Others prefer ongoing support during transitions.

What if we earn very different incomes?

That’s one of the most common reasons couples seek counseling — and one of the most productive areas to address.

What Couples Gain From Financial Counseling

Couples who engage in financial counseling often report:

  • Fewer reactive money arguments

  • Clearer roles and expectations

  • More confidence making big decisions

  • Less resentment around money and chores

  • A shared language for future conversations

  • Feeling like a team again

The financial benefits matter. The relational benefits are often bigger.
