Door County: The Ultimate Vacation Guide for Couples

8 min read

Door County, Wisconsin, is one of my favorite places in the world. For context, I’ve spent extended time in nine countries and prioritize picturesque nature spots when I plan vacations. I manage work addiction issues and need the peace and tranquility nature brings. Door County in the fall gives me everything I need, and I’m thankful my wife feels the same.

You might have heard of Door County, which is commonly referred to as the Cape Cod of the Midwest. Locals see more similarities to Maine because it hasn’t been commercialized so far. It’s a series of Hallmark-movie towns along the bay and Lake Michigan, connected by winding roads and a landscape full of natural beauty.

We fly into Green Bay, Wisconsin, roughly 90 minutes from Door County. Tickets aren’t cheap because it’s a regional airport, but the cheaper option is more than twice as far.

National Geographic did a nice job giving this broad overview of what to expect in Door County. This post focuses more on our personal experiences over two fall trips. Although I highlight a bunch of individual businesses, I’m not being compensated for what I’m sharing. I just want the Modern Husbands community to know about one of the best places in the United States.

I don’t enjoy shopping at all. But if you do, there are countless options. Click here to review all of the options.

One thing to mention: always visit their websites or call ahead for hours. Many places close at odd hours and on odd days.

Door County Places to Stay

If I were in your shoes, I would ask AI for suggestions based on your own criteria because Door County really does have it all. Cottages, hotels, cabins, condos, campgrounds, RV Parks, and large homes, all in different areas and settings with a wide range of amenities and price points. Bayside, lakeside, interior lakes, and secluded wooded areas are all options.

If you’re looking for a town to stay in, include the following in your criteria. My list is in order of preference, from my favorite to least favorite towns.

  • Baileys Harbor

  • Fish Creek

  • Egg Harbor

  • Sister Bay

  • Ephraim

  • Ellison Bay

  • Sturgeon Bay

One caveat: Jacksonport isn't on this list because we stay just outside it, and it’s our favorite place to stay, with excellent food.

For us, being on Lake Michigan is a priority. The deal-breaker is whether we can hear the waves crashing against the shore from our cabin. If you can’t, we won’t stay there. We also prefer small, rustic cabins in the woods.

Click here for where we stayed last. For us, it was absolutely perfect. We’ve already booked and paid for our stay next fall of 2027. I can’t say enough good things about the property and the owner. If I were single, I would probably buy it and live there for most of the year.

Door County Hiking and Parks

You could spend a month in Door County and still not have time to take advantage of all it offers outdoors. You can choose from five state parks and more than 20 county parks. Despite my efforts, I still haven't come close to experiencing all the hiking trails.

We can also kayak in the summer and do other water activities, but we haven’t done those yet. For this post, I’ll focus on our own experiences.

Peninsula State Park

We spent time at Peninsula State Park on our Trolley tour (more about that later), but because my wife had a minor injury, we didn’t get to hike any trails. Next time, for sure! The Trolley tour guide spent at least 45 minutes winding us through the park, stopping to point out stunning views and share stories about the land.

Pro Tip: You can buy a one-day sticker good for any park, so consider combining your hikes into one day if you only plan to do a couple.

Newport State Park

Door County: The Ultimate Vacation Guide for Couples

We hiked throughout Newport State Park in the fall of 2025 (image above). About 30 miles of hiking trails wind through the woods along the lakeside. We spent half a day there and loved every minute.

Door County Activities

There's plenty to do in Door County. Don’t rely solely on this list. I’m only sharing what looked fun for us and that we did. Many activities are seasonal, and so far, we’ve only visited Door County in the fall.

Door County Trolley Tours

Door County Trolley Tours offers a bunch of options; we’ve done two and loved both. When we return, we’ll do a different tour. You’ll want to visit the site to find the tours that are ideal for you.

For our first trip, we did the Wine, Chocolate & Artisan Cheese Tour. I don’t love wine, but my wife does, so she doubled up, and I went to the bar and grabbed a Wisconsin Old Fashioned. Next stop: Wisconsin Cheese Masters. It’s full of the world’s best cheeses (literally). You don’t have to be on the tour to stop in; you can taste it when you visit, as we did on our last trip. We brought home $80 in cheese. Next door is Harbor Ridge Winery. The folks are super kind, and there is excellent wine to choose from. The last stop was some sort of chocolate place, but I hate chocolate, so I hit the bar beside it for a Spotted Cow.

We took the Narrated Scenic Tour for our last trip. I highly recommend starting your week with it! Our expert local guide shared insider tips on the best places to wine, dine, and explore throughout the county.

John Berns was our tour guide, and he was the best. Frankly, he made the tour special. He’s also an author. He wrote 9 Innings of Memories and Heroes, which I’ll cover in a later book review.

Peninsula Players Theatre

Peninsula Players Theatre is America’s oldest professional resident summer theatre, with a history as captivating as the plays staged at the theater over the past 90 years. It was recommended to us on our Trolley tour; otherwise, we wouldn’t have known it existed.

It was lovely! The play was excellent, the setting was beautiful, and going an hour early to enjoy the outdoor festivities is a must! I highly recommend attending a play.

Hands On Art Studio

Thursday was rainy, so we decided to make our own art at Hands On Art Studio. The staff was super friendly, and we had plenty of time to make our own art. You can choose from any of the following:

  • Art Barn - Ceramics

  • Art Barn- JewelryStudio

  • Mosaic Studio

  • Fused Glass

  • Painting Studio

Even if the weather is nice, you should check it out. We’ll be back.

Door County Lighthouses

We visited the Cana Island Lighthouse just outside of Baileys Harbor. Built in 1869, it stands watch on Lake Michigan's shore. I’m not sure it was worth the price of admission for us, but it was a unique experience nonetheless.

Door County Towns, Restaurants, and Coffee

I like to drink. I like to eat. And I’m addicted to great coffee. Door County has great places for all three! If you’re a fan of Old Fashioneds as I am, you’ll want to try a Wisconsin Old Fashioned (sweet). You can look up a recipe on Google, but I suggest having a local bartender make it or buying a premixed drink at the grocery store. I’ll share where in a moment.

Beer drinkers will also want to try a traditional Spotted Cow lager. They are only sold in Wisconsin, and frankly, they are the only lager I like. I prefer rich stouts or Guinness. Every bar I visited had it.

Anyhow, here’s our list in alphabetical order.

Door County Baileys Harbor

Door County: The Ultimate Vacation Guide for Couples

Baileys Harbor is probably our favorite town center. The image above captures its beauty, and it has excellent food and coffee options. Click here to learn more about Baileys Harbor.

But for us, what sets it apart is the food and coffee.

Harbor Fish Market and Grille is one of our favorites. I had the fish sandwich (walleye). But there were countless excellent options, like the Connecticut Lobster Roll and fish and chips. We started with the Crab Rangoon Dip, and it didn’t disappoint.

Inland Door County makes all its crusts with sourdough. The mushroom + lemon is the best pizza I’ve ever had. We added housemade pork fennel sausage.

Sway Beer made the best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had. It includes a local egg, spicy sausage, cheddar, herb aioli, chili crisp, green onion, on a sourdough English muffin.

Roast and Banter Coffee is excellent. The staff is super friendly, and cortados are only $3.50!

Blue Ox Bar has a one-of-a-kind feel inside. It’s worth dropping in and ordering a drink.

Door County Egg Harbor

Door County: The Ultimate Vacation Guide for Couples

I captured the photo above after dinner in Egg Harbor.

You’ll want to take note that Main Street Market is the only grocery store in Door County with lots of options. They close early, so check the hours before you go.

Casey's BBQ and Smokehouse was recommended on our tour. The chili was good, but I kicked myself when the smoked wings came out; they looked even better. Sit at the bar where there’s a view.

Door County Ephraim

Door County: The Ultimate Vacation Guide for Couples

We love driving through Ephraim. It’s quaint and tranquil at night.

Waterfront is an upscale restaurant we patronized on our first trip. The evening view when the sun sets is spectacular. Call ahead to reserve a good seat.

Click here to learn more about Ephraim.

Door County Fish Creek

Fish Creek is a close second to our favorite town. They have our favorite market, great coffee, and plenty of great food options. It’s also very close to Peninsula State Park.

White Gull Inn is where you can find the Door County Cherry Stuffed French Toast – voted America’s favorite by Good Morning America. I had the Eggs Benedict, and they were wonderful. Just steps away at the end of the cul-de-sac, you’ll find a small park with a lovely view of the water.

Blue Horse Cafe has good coffee and an even better bay view.

Fish Creek Market is where we go for spirits and the best white fish spread you’ll ever eat. They make it fresh and run out, so call ahead to make sure they still have it.

Fish Creek has plenty of other options we haven’t tried. Click here to learn more.

Door County Jacksonport

Wally's Weenie Wagon "The Restaurant" started as an award-winning food truck. They have excellent coffee, gyros, and Chicago-style hot dogs (they’re from Chicago). I love their fun-loving atmosphere and even bought a shirt.

Island Fever Bar and Grill has the best French fries I’ve ever had. They have a shelf with bottles valued up to $3,000, and the bartender made my favorite Wisconsin Old Fashioned. The Island Fever Cuban includes a 14-hour smoked pork and is outstanding, but you can’t go wrong with any of their food. If this place were in midtown (Atlanta), where we live, the plates would be $75+.

Scotty’s Pub and Grub has excellent chili and is one of the few remaining places that serve fried mushrooms. They are known for their broasted chicken.

Door County Sister Bay

We have attended the Sister Bay Fall Fest both years. Enjoy live music, delicious food and drinks from local restaurants and non-profits, over 100 vendors at the Arts & Crafts Fair, the annual Fall Fest Parade, a kids’ carnival with bouncy houses, the exciting Ping Pong Ball Drop, and the Derby Race on Sunday morning.

Sister Bay is one of Door County's most popular towns and a popular wedding venue. Click here to learn more about Sister Bay.
