Couples Financial Coach

Talking about money is tough for many couples. It's usually touchy because it brings up emotions that can feel hard or embarrassing to share.
In our country, many people see their net worth and self-worth as one and the same. Feeling this way fuels our economic engine but is toxic for our minds and hearts. That's why it's so important to hire someone whose expertise isn't limited to the mechanics of personal finance.
Chances are you started reading this article because you were searching for a couples financial coach. I am a Certified Financial Therapist™ and Accredited Financial Counselor®.
You don't need any education or accreditation to call yourself a financial coach, so be careful when considering your options. For this post, I'll share what I do and how I can support you.
What Is a Couples Financial Coach?
As I shared before, you don't need any education or accreditation to call yourself a financial coach, so there are a myriad of ways they describe themselves. They usually advertise services to help you with your money habits, relying on personal experience or generic frameworks and workbooks.
In the wrong hands, the role can amount to giving relationship and financial advice with more confidence than training, relying on personal experience, generic frameworks, or motivational coaching rather than evidence-based practice.
Why Couples Hire a Financial Coach
Many high school graduates are left behind by a system that failed to provide a dedicated personal finance class. They might have had parents who knew very little about money, or worse, didn't know anything about money but thought they did. Either way, folks usually hire a financial coach because they need financial solutions.
