Premarital Financial Counseling

Arguments about money are the strongest and most consistent behavioral predictor of divorce, outranking conflicts over sex, children, or in-laws. Managing money together is a strategy schools don't teach, and it looks different today than it did for your parents decades ago.
Premarital financial counseling is a 21st-century marriage survival skill. Our world is more expensive and complex than ever, and two-career households are now the norm. Learning to manage money in your marriage through the school of hard knocks can be the most painful and expensive financial decision of your life.
I'm a Certified Financial Therapist™, Accredited Financial Counselor® (AFC®), Fair Play® Certified Facilitator, and financial educator with a master's degree in education.
My professional background includes serving as a Visiting Scholar with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Office of Financial Education, serving as a Working Group Member on President Obama’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability, and receiving a Milken National Educator Award for my work as a personal finance and economics educator.
I’ve been married since 2002. We both have had successful careers, and we have three children. My lived experience drives my passion; my education drives my client support.

What Is Premarital Financial Counseling?
Premarital financial counseling is a collaborative process that helps engaged (and recently married) couples take their first financial steps forward as a team. I work to understand your individual financial situation and your relationship with money. I help couples align on shared goals that match their values and beliefs.
Unlike traditional financial planning, which often emphasizes investment management and retirement planning, my work focuses on the far more frequent financial choices couples make together in their daily lives. Many of those choices stem from emotions and our upbringings, factors that shape the financial formula that works best in your relationship.
What Some of My Past Premarital Clients Are Saying

I was honored that a fellow financial expert, who is trained in a different financial sector, chose to select me for support and had the wisdom to understand the benefit of the support. Here is what he had to say about his background and our time together.
“As a CPA, I’m comfortable with numbers, investments, and financial planning, but managing money as a married couple is a different skill entirely... With differences in income, existing assets, retirement goals, and family plans, Yao and I wanted to be proactive about building a financial system that works for both of us before tying the knot.
Working with Brian Page was a great experience. He helped us think through our finances as a couple. We identified what we wanted to discuss and began approaching our finances as a team. He gave us a clearer path to align our goals and build a strong financial foundation for our marriage. We’d highly recommend premarital financial counseling to other couples. It’s much easier to build healthy habits and address potential issues now than to resolve conflicts after they’ve developed.” — Vince and Yao Sun Mui

"Brian was a great help! He explained how finances can affect our relationship and how to set ourselves up for success. He explained things in terms that we can understand and use. We couldn’t recommend him enough to newlyweds looking to start their relationship with healthy patterns." — Billy and Kingsley Durrill

What Will We Cover in Premarital Financial Counseling?
I designed the Marriage Toolkit as the program every couple can use. If you haven’t read through the jaw-dropping professional backgrounds of the contributors, now is the time to do so. You can use the Marriage Toolkit on your own time; time with me is customized support.
For some couples, I could provide the support they need in one session if they utilize the Marriage Toolkit. For other couples, it takes more time because their circumstances are more complex.
Every couple enters marriage with a different financial situation. Our sessions focus on your priorities, concerns, and goals.
Here are seven common areas couples ask that I address:
1. Combining finances or not.
2. Building a spending plan (budget) for couples.
3. Managing debt and building credit.
4. Aligning your savings and financial goals.
5. Understanding your money beliefs.
6. Preparing for income differences and family planning.
7. Mistakes young couples make that can be avoided.
