House Hang: The Social Solution for Savers

55% of workers do not have enough savings set aside to cover a $500 emergency expense, according to a recent SecureSave survey. Why? A recent Empower survey said that 2 in 3 said a rising cost of living is getting in the way. 

A bad solution is to stop hanging out with friends and family to cut costs. Sure, you’d avoid the high cost of going out for dinner and drinks, but not spending time with your buddies is a path toward depression. 

The House Hang is the solution for savers. Here are 13 non-alcoholic and inexpensive House Hang ideas. 

13 House Hang Ideas

1. Play Rummikub

Rummikub is our favorite game to play with friends and family.  It’s a strategy tile game for 2 to 4 players. There are a hundred or so tiles numbered 1 through 13 in four colors, plus two jokers—to form runs and groups. The first player to empty their rack wins.

2. Host a make-your-own pizza night

The most popular recipe I saw online is from The Food Charlatan. It clearly takes some effort, so a simple hack to speed up and simplify the process is to buy the premade dough.

3. Play board games or card games

4. Set up a build-your-own sundae bar

Do you want to see your wife smile like mine? Pick this House Hang option. I found the ideas shared in this post helpful: How To Make The Ultimate Ice Cream Sundae Bar. 

5. Hold a themed movie marathon

I wrote 13 Romantic Comedies Husbands Can Tolerate to save unknowing husbands from the nauseating experience of The Notebook, or any movie like it. Nevertheless – when it comes to movie nights, the rom-com genre might not always be our first choice, but sometimes compromise is in order. 

6. Host a trivia competition

Test your general knowledge with Trivial Pursuit. It even comes in various editions. You can create your own Jeopardy! game at home or find a board game version. I’ve been told Trivia Maker is a good option for making your own trivia questions. 

7. Organize a potluck dinner

8. Try an escape-room-in-a-box game

I’ve never tried this myself, but friends have, and they’ve enjoyed it.

9. Host a karaoke night

My wife and I love to play Mario Kart. It’s the greatest racing game of all time!

I’ve never done it, but I plan to. I wish I had personal advice to share, but I don’t. When we do host one, I’m going to use this list to plan the evening.
