Managing a household while juggling work, family, and personal growth can feel overwhelming. Tyler Moore, known as Tidy Dad, offers an inspiring and practical approach to navigating these challenges.
I recently interviewed Tyler and share in this post his insights on instilling responsibility in children, working collaboratively with a partner, and maintaining balance at home.
Teaching Responsibility: Start at Home
One of Tyler's core values as a parent is teaching his children the importance of teamwork and responsibility. He emphasizes that running a family requires collective effort.
Making Teamwork the Norm
Tyler’s family operates efficiently by assigning shared tasks to everyone. For example:
Laundry Day: After returning from the laundromat, each family member sorts and puts away their own clothes.
Mealtime Cleanup: Everyone clears the table, regardless of whose dishes are left behind.
These small practices teach children accountability and foster a sense of unity. As Tyler notes,
“When kids see these tasks as a natural part of family life, they’re more likely to develop independence and responsibility.”
This approach doesn’t just benefit the family in the present—it’s also preparation for the future.
Tyler likens the home to a "training ground" for game day, equipping children with the skills and habits they’ll need to thrive independently and contribute effectively in work and community settings.
Working Together as Partners
Sharing a home with a partner is another layer of complexity, but clear communication and shared values can make all the difference.
Communicating Openly
Tyler and his wife frequently discuss:
The types of work they enjoy and the tasks that bring them stress.
How their professional lives impact their energy and mindset at home.
Acknowledging that life’s demands rarely allow for a perfect 50-50 split, they focus instead on flexibility and understanding.
Stop Doing All the Work
In his book Tidy Up Your Life, Tyler introduces the idea of letting go of the expectation to do it all. This can be achieved through:
Outsourcing: For example, involving children in chores.
Eliminating: Tyler avoids yard work entirely by living in a city apartment without a lawn.
Simplifying: Using tools like apps to manage recurring tasks, such as watering plants.
These strategies reduce stress and allow both partners to focus on what truly matters.
Balancing Efficiency and Adventure
While efficiency is a priority, Tyler also values adventure and creativity as central to family life.
Creating Space for What Matters
The Moore family carves out time for adventures, from exploring New York City to retreating to their Pennsylvania cottage for outdoor activities. Tyler ensures that their home life supports these experiences by emphasizing teamwork and tidiness.
Finding Joy in Everyday Routines
Tyler’s practical systems—like a capsule wardrobe to reduce decision fatigue—demonstrate how small adjustments can make daily life smoother, freeing up energy for meaningful experiences.
The Power of Small Actions
Tyler’s parting advice is simple yet transformative: “When you use something, put it away.” Whether it’s scissors, dishes, or tools, taking a few seconds to tidy up after yourself can prevent clutter and reduce stress for everyone in the household.
Wrapping it Up
Tyler Moore’s approach to managing family life is a testament to the power of intentionality. By fostering responsibility in children, collaborating with a partner, and embracing efficiency, families can create space for what truly matters. As Tyler reminds us, the goal isn’t perfection but progress toward a more harmonious and joyful home.
