Parenting is a journey full of decisions, challenges, and rewards. For dual-career couples like ourselves, being aligned in their parenting approach is essential to building a healthy family dynamic.
I spoke with Paige Connell to discuss practical advice for navigating this aspect of family life, emphasizing the importance of teamwork, communication, and mutual respect. Paige is a married working mom of four young children.
Our discussion coalesced into five key tips for how busy dual career couples can team up to parent young children.
1. Communicate Early and Often
One of the central themes of our discussion was the necessity of proactive communication. Paige highlighted how crucial it is to discuss parenting decisions in advance when possible, but also to address disagreements calmly after the fact.
She cautioned against hashing out differences in front of children, sharing that they've made that mistake before, but we learned quickly to save those conversations for later.
This approach fosters unity and ensures that both parents are respected and heard. Regular discussions about decisions, whether big or small, help maintain a shared vision for parenting.
2. Back Each Other Up
“The number one thing you need to do is get each other’s back. Whatever is decided, you’ve got to support one another.”
This principle helps children feel secure and prevents them from exploiting differences between parents.
Couples establish an agreed-upon strategy for managing risk tolerance. For instance, if one parent says no to a situation, the other should support that decision until they can discuss it further. This mutual support creates consistency, which children thrive on.
3. Tailor Parenting to Your Family
Parenting is not one-size-fits-all. Modern parenting labels like “gentle” or “authoritative” can feel restrictive.
“I don’t say I’m any kind of parent. My husband and I are aligned on things we feel strongly about and learn as we go.” - Paige Connell
By staying flexible and adapting to your family’s needs, you can create a parenting style that works for everyone. Whether it’s setting rules around food, managing screen time, or encouraging independence, the key is aligning with your partner on what matters most.
4. Learn From Each Other
Informed parenting plays a vital role, particularly when one partner has more experience or knowledge in a specific area. An example Paige shared was cutting grapes to prevent choking hazards, something her husband hadn’t considered before she brought it up.
Parents can make safer and more informed decisions by listening to and learning from each other.
5. The Power of Respect and Consistency
Respecting each other’s perspectives and maintaining consistency in front of children is crucial to parenting success.
As I pointed out, consistent support strengthens the parental bond and sets a clear example for kids. Kids will find a kink in the armor if you don’t stand united.”
Final Thoughts
For dual-career couples, aligning on parenting isn’t always easy, but it is deeply rewarding. Communication, mutual support, and flexibility lay the foundation for a strong parenting partnership. As Paige eloquently put it,
“You get to decide what works for your family.” By prioritizing these principles, you can foster a loving and balanced environment for your children.
