Three Inspiring Movies Every Dad Should Watch

Raising a child is one of the most challenging yet rewarding journeys a father can experience. Far too often, the roles of parents depicted in movies fall into historical gender roles or only show men as Lead Dads (see Company of Dads) in comedic roles – the "butt of the joke."
According to the Census Bureau, single fathers account for 20% of single-parent households and 24%, according to PEW. I share this because single dads are also forced to do it all. While most movies depict men as being strong only in traditionally male roles within the home, movies about single fathers do so in ways that connect with many dads today.
Single or not, the percentage of households with men taking more active roles in the home is on the rise. Now, I am not suggesting that broadly speaking, there is equity in the home. However, continued inequities should not be why we ignore progress or the way of life for many Lead Dads and Modern Husbands.
Movies have a unique way of reflecting our realities, offering entertainment, comfort, and inspiration. The following three films celebrate dads' resilience, love, and strength. The lessons and the inspiration in each movie can apply to married fathers.
1. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
"You got a dream… You gotta protect it."
This movie, based on the true story of Chris Gardner, is not just a film—it's a masterclass in perseverance. Will Smith plays a father who finds himself homeless while trying to provide for his young son. Through every setback, whether sleeping in subway restrooms or facing constant rejection, Chris never gives up on his dream of creating a better life for his child.
What makes this film deeply moving is its raw honesty. Chris doesn't have all the answers, nor does he always know what tomorrow will bring, but his unwavering determination keeps him going. Single dads watching this will see that it's okay to struggle, stumble, and feel lost. The key lies in showing up for your child, no matter how hard life gets.
2. Palmer (2021)

Palmer is a heartfelt drama starring Justin Timberlake as Eddie Palmer, a former college football star who returns to his small hometown after serving a prison sentence. Struggling to rebuild his life, Palmer forms an unexpected bond with Sam, a precocious and nonconforming young boy abandoned by his troubled mother. Through their growing friendship, Palmer learns the true meaning of fatherhood, acceptance, and second chances.
The film's inspiring message lies in its portrayal of how love, patience, and kindness can transform lives and break generational cycles of hardship. Every dad should watch Palmer for its poignant reminder of the power of mentorship, compassion, and standing up for those who don't fit societal norms.
3. Finestkind (2023)
[Spoiler Alert! The video clip below]
Finestkind is a gripping crime drama that delves into the complexities of family, loyalty, and sacrifice. The film follows two half-brothers, Tom (Ben Foster) and Charlie (Toby Wallace), who are reunited and quickly drawn into a dangerous world of crime to settle a debt with a ruthless gang in Boston.
Set against the harsh backdrop of the commercial fishing industry, the story weaves themes of survival and resilience with the brothers' struggle to protect each other and their family. Featuring powerful performances, including Tommy Lee Jones as their steadfast father, Finestkind showcases the lengths a father will go to guide, protect, and hold his family together.
It's an inspiring movie for dads because it highlights the unshakable bonds of family and the sacrifices that define fatherhood, making it a testament to the strength of paternal love and integrity in the face of adversity.
